Member Comments: When we bought our desert dream house my wife knew the moment we parked in front of it - sight unseen.  The inside needed a little TLC and we were ready to move in it.  The backyard however - left something to be desired.  A large backyard by Phoenix standards- some nice desert shrubs around the perimeter and a large curbed in grass yard - in the desert?  We decided to have a Spa installed - which took care of 1/3 of our backyard eye sore.  We had a plan and asked for input from a few landscapers and Abracadabra outshined all of them.  They spent considerable time visiting with us, getting to know us, reviewing our plan, making suggestions to improve the plan - and like driving up to the house - my wife knew that Abracadabra was for us.  Our project started on October 13, and 3 weeks later - on November 4 - they had transformed our backyard into a paradise that my wife refers to as my happy place.  The attention to detail is amazing - the sidewalk replaced by pavers winds up to the covered patio like a yellow brick road and the sea of perfectly laid and cut pavers leads out to the Spa and surrounds a beautiful fire pit.  Out from the patio and left of the fire pit is a difficult 4 hole - L shaped green (artificial turf of course) - complete with areas where you can chip.  I use it several times per day.  At night - when I look out the back door - the up lit (LED) Palms remind me of the Mexican resorts that we have visited through the years.  We are so happy - I wish we had a more places to see what imaginative 'happy places' that Abracadabra could conjure up.

The absolute best experience we've ever had with any type of contractor.  During the initial consultation and first review of the plans it was evident Jim really listens to what the homeowner is trying to accomplish with the project.  It did come in a bit over our budget initially, but he was quick to offer solutions to bring the cost in line with what we wanted to spend without feeling like we were sacrificing anything.  The communication was impeccable throughout the project from Jim and Julie; we knew exactly what to expect and when to expect it.

Jim and his crew did outstanding work, were very professional and courteous, and we couldn't be happier with the final result.  We had neighbors approach us to comment on how great the front yard looked the day after work was completed!  We plan to have them back out next year to redo portions of our backyard and pool.

Description Of Work:
In short Jim and Paul and the crew took our backyard mess and made it into an oasis. They installed travertine on our patio, around the pool and created a deck with a bar on it for entertaining. Prior to their work our backyard looked like a little bit of dying grass and a fire pit surrounded by gravel. Now it is comfortable, plush and the sod they planted has not only weathered the Phoenix heat but super monsoons. They also re-sodded our front yard into awesomeness!

First off Jim came in, and without any prompting from me saw issues with our backyard that I told two other landscapers needed correcting. The other two landscapers said they were not issues or way too expensive to cure. Jim saw the same issues as I and more. One of them being a major drainage issue that I didn't recognize. All was issues were included in his bid. Second of all Jim came highly recommended by our neighbors. (Their front yard is beautiful.) Abracadabra also re-sodded our front yard and it is the envy of the neighborhood. You see we had our backyard landscaped a little over two years ago and the work was terrible and the contractor did everything he could to keep from coming back to fix stuff. We got him from a home show. Word to the wise, stay away from home show contractors unless you can get LOCAL, close to home referrals. Then go talk to their customers and see the work on job a year old or more. That will show you the truth. Anyhow; Jim gave us a bid slightly lower than the other landscape contractors, but for more work. He asked us what our budget was and he stuck to it but yet gave us an end product that exceeded our expectations. He even, for lack of a better term, required us to meet with him at a nursery so we could look over the plants he felt were best for us. We agreed on most of his choices, and the couple we didn't agree on, he was able to advise us on some other selections.

Something else that impressed me, which is not easily done because I have been in the plumbing trade for over 30 years, is how he works. He said he would only work on our job until it was done. He would not be bouncing around on a bunch of other jobs and he would most definitely meet his schedule. He was right on both counts and that is how he works. BUT what amazed us was he made his deadline, even after we added some stuff to the job. It's not in my nature to do that because it usually throws a job into a spin, but not with Abracadabra. Now let me make something clear. Once he gave us the bid, and we excepted it, we had to wait for I think it was four to six weeks for him to begin. There were others in front of us. He had to complete each of those job individually, then he would get to us. But we new this on the first day we met with him before we even received our bid.  We have had a couple of issues since the original work was done. We have had some plants that did not make it. Planting in August in Arizona, and having everything make it is impossible. But they have come back and replaced each plant that died. No questions asked. The best part was we never called them on it. This is where their follow up is second to none. They have made a few trips back just to see how everything was, they made some adjustments to the irrigation systems and fixed a couples of loose pieces of travertine.

To wrap up my ramblings here Abracadabra is one of the best company's I have ever had in my home. I would recommend them to God himself and feel especially comfortable that I did the right thing. If you live in in Maricopa county, you would be insane to not talk to Jim at Abracadabra first and last. Him, his son Paul and the crew are the best of the best!

Oh and one more thing, if Jim suggests not doing something you want done, listen to the man. We wanted a few citrus trees relocated more for looks than anything else. He said it was was not a good thing because of the current triple digit heat. Me being the brainiac I think I am, said just do it, they would be fine. Jim did everything he could to change my mind. But because he has the "customer is always right, even when they are wrong" mind set, he moved the trees, he did everything he could to keep them alive, but it didn't happen. So now, because Jim was right, once it cools off we will have him plant new trees at my expense. Because I have been a service plumber for over 30 years, you would think I know better and just listen to the real pro. So when you have him do whatever you're going to have him do, just listen to him. He knows what he's talking about.
